March's Topic: Mobility with Security - Sun's Strategic Vision for the Desktop
PRESENTATION AND DEMO INCLUDING LAPTOPS, SUNRAY'S AND WINTEL

Customers today are challenged with finding a desktop computing strategy that balances cost of ownership, the drive to mobilize the workforce, and increasing security threats in a market where OS support is going away, unfair licensing practices are driving up costs, and virus and worms are spreading like wildfire.

Come hear how Sun is offering a viable Windows alternative that is comprehensive, highly affordable and a secure enterprise desktop solution that is simple to use and works with existing infrastructure.  Sun will provide demonstration kit and allow attendees to witness firsthand how Sun is providing answers to these four issues with the Java Desktop System:

1. Simple and Comprehensive: fully integrated and familiar desktop environment with Java, Mail/Calendaring client, Office Productivity suite, Web Browser and Java Card Authentication

2. Secure: use of Linux/Unix strict security and Java infrastructure prevents viruses and worms from infecting the systems environment, leverage user authentication through the Java Card technology

3. Interoperable: leverage existing file formats, print to shared environments, leverage existing backend systems: SendMail, Exchange, Sun ONE, integrated Java 2 SE

4. Cost Effective: pricing model is based on a very low cost per desktop, amounts to 75% less expensive than MicroSoft Office/Windows XP upgrade and extends the life of existing hardware

Cecil Jacobs has 19 years of experience in the computer industry with background in structured programming for the USAF, followed by 7 years of hand-on field experience with Sun and other Unix solutions for military, government and commercial customers.  Cecil has been with Sun for  5 years with duties ranging from pre-sales systems engineering to one of 50 Data Management Ambassadors and has extensive experience with the deployment of business solutions utilizing SunRay technology.  Cecil will provide the content for this meeting as well as provide a live demonstration of the Java Desktop System in action!
