SPARC Meeting (S)un (P)rofessionals' (A)ssociation of (R)ichmond (C)omputer users

DATE: Thursday May 3, 2001

TIME: 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Topic: From A to J : Moving from ASP to JSP using the J2EE Blueprints

Focusing on real world examples, the J2EE Blueprints foster "portable, scaleable, and robust" application development. They provide a roadmap for teams using the Java 2 Platform, with helpful guidelines on architecture and best practices.

Today, talented Microsoft developers are looking for ways to transition into the Java world, many of them hoping to leverage their ASP experience to quickly become proficient in the new JSP technology.

Going forward, it is crucial that all JSP developers and their fellow team members grasp the usefulness of the Custom Tag Libraries. In essence paralleling XML's revolution of custom tags for data, the ability to create Custom Tags in JSP 1.1 promises much higher productivity.

ecause they are written in Java, Custom Tags are both reusable and portable, and used properly they can reduce the amount of Java embedded in a JSP page, especially when data retrieval, looping or state information is needed to generate the resulting HTML page.

Custom Tags also allow graphic designers and developers cooperate seamlessly on web projects, since Java code is not needed in the JSP pages themselves.
